Pouilly-Fumé 2011

Château Favray Pouilly-Fumé 2011

AOC Pouilly-Fumé, France

Vic Harradine 4 stars
Herbaceous, flinty and floral... lemon-lime, ripe pineapple and orchard fruit riding a racy river over the palate. It's mid weight and nicely textured with a crisp, mouth-watering aftertaste. Well balanced and brimming with fruit flavour and good moderating acidity, it delivers on all counts. Pair with dressed arugula under crumbled chèvre.

St-Qvinis Rosé 2012

Château Fontade St-Qvinis Rosé 2012

Provence, France

David Lawrason 88 points
This very pale, pastel pink rose is very typical of Provencal roses. It has fragrant nose of sour cherry/currant jam, dried herbs and a floral note. It feels light but with 13.5% alcohol actually has some viscosity and heat, with a warm, slightly bitter pink grapefruit finish. The length is good to very good, with fruit and herbs persisting.

Gros Manseng 2011

Domaine Papolle Gros Manseng 2011

Côtes de Gascogne, France

David Lawrason 91 points
Now here's a wine with character, even though some will find it too adventurous. It's an off-dry yet nicely tart-edged white with a terrific, exotic nose of apricot, evergreen/spearmint, honey and persimmon. It's mid-weight, fairly dense and rich with great acid-sugar ying-yang, and excellent length. I am not sure what the ideal match would be - but I can see it well chilled on the summer deck with Asian inspired salads, sushi.

Bricco Enrichetta 2011

Daniele Pelassa Bricco Enrichetta 2011

Piedmont, Italy

Vic Harradine 4 stars
Aromas of mixed spice, lilac and dark, mixed field berry open this approachable red blend. It makes a balanced, soft landing on the palate with a smooth and mellow wash of racy, lip-smacking red cherry mingling with sweet, ripe briary berry. Mid weight and silky smooth, it finishes in a blaze of mouth-watering zing and tang. Perfect as an aperitif to get the gustatory juices active, it also pairs well with pasta in tomato sauce, pizza or seafood/chorizo paella.

San Vito Roero Arneis 2011

Daniele Pelassa San Vito Roero Arneis 2011

Piedmont, Italy

Vic Harradine 4.5 stars
Arneis is a white indigenous grape of Piedmonte. Due to complexity and its tony neighbourhood, it’s also known as Barolo Bianco. Tropical fruit, floral notes and citrus zest on the nose, it delivers a stunning wash of beautifully balanced flavour—succulent white peach, ripe pear and green apple interlaced with minerality and racy, lip-smacking lemon tang. It's mid weight with generous mouth feel and mouth-watering finish.

Reserva 2009

Quinta das Camélias Reserva 2009

Dão, Portugal

Vic Harradine 4 stars
A blend of two premium Port grapes, this opens with aromas of dark coffee bean, cherry and loads of mixed spice. It's medium-full bodied and overflowing with complex, rustic flavours that bloom in the glass and on the palate - bittersweet chocolate, dark, succulent cherry and ripe briary berry interlaced with spice and roasted herbs.
Case of 12: $179.40 ($14.95 per bottle)

Get to Know a Grape: Mauzac

This week, we're looking at an aromatic French white wine grape: Mauzac!Unless you happen to be a sparkling wine aficionado, you may not have heard of Mauzac before. Popular with winemakers in Southwest France in the 1970s and 1980s, Mauzac has since become supplanted by the better-known Chardonnay as the leading white wine grape for the region. Nevertheless, many wineries in parts of Languedoc and Southwest France continue to use Mauzac to create...   Continue Reading
